Reflective Prompts

Essay A: Please introduce yourself to the Yunasa community . You may address, but are not limited to, the following prompts. 

  • All campers share a living space in dorms or cabins. Write a note to your future roommate so they can get to know you better. 
  • What kinds of things excite you?

Essay: In an essay of 500 words or less, please address prompt ONE if this year's camp will be your second time attending Yunasa, OR prompt TWO if you have attended camp two or  more times. Please address each sub-question.

    Leadership campers are accepted to Yunasa with added responsibilities. While leadership campers are given more freedom, they are expected to adhere to all the same rules as other campers. Leadership campers are role models for younger campers and are selected based on demonstrated personal growth and maturity.

    All leadership campers must complete a phone interview to gain acceptance to the Leadership Program. Acceptance into the Leadership Program is not guaranteed, as there is limited space available.

    Please Note: The Leadership Program will be held at Yunasa West in 2022.
    Essay: In an essay of 500 words or less, please address one of the following:
      If you are a first-time Leadership applicant, please answer this question:
      • Why do you want to be a Yunasa leadership camper? Looking through the world you come from – for example, your family, community, and school – tell us how your world has shaped your aspirations and what do you hope to contribute to the tribe?
      If you were a Leadership camper last year, please answer this question:
      • Tell us about your 2021. What do you hope to work on and look forward to at camp this year?



      Essay B: Please respond to one of the following scenarios. You may choose to use an alternate medium including collage, artwork, audio or video recordings, or 3-dimensional work. 

      3-D work can be photographed or copied. If you choose an alternate medium, please include a description of the item. The quality of your work is more important than the length of your answers.  Please clearly identify which prompts you are answering. 
      1. What is your fondest memory?
      2. What is an issue (global, political, or personal) that is important to you and why? How would you venture to implement helpful change?
      3. If you oversaw your school, what changes would you make? 
      4. Describe your favorite place, actual or fictional. Why is this place important to you?

      Work Sample: Please submit a project or piece of work you have created in the past year of which you are most proud. Explain why this piece of work is important to you.  The piece of work may be in any academic or non-academic domain, but should demonstrate your creativity, ingenuity, and aptitude. Your work may be submitted in any of the formats listed above.

      So that we are able to help where we can, please discuss any social, emotional, academic, or personal issues that have arisen in the past year of which we should be aware.

      Parent Statement: Please submit a letter from the camper's parent/guardian.  The letter should discuss the most important things for us to know about the camper. What are their special personality traits, talents, strengths/weaknesses, specific overexcitabilities and/or sensitivities, etc.? Are there any unusual or personal circumstances that have affected your child’s educational or personal experiences?

      Letter of Recommendation: Letter is only required for first time leadership applicants.

      Please ask a teacher, coach, tutor, administrator or community leader to submit a letter of recommendation directly to IEA. Please ask the recommender to address the letter of recommendation to Issabela Tulalian and email it no later than January 31st, 2022  to yunasa@educationaladvancement.org.

      Recommender should address the following:
      • Leadership applicant’s peer mentor experience.
      • Leadership applicant’s personal leadership potential.
      • Leadership applicant’s ability to work well with others.
      Assessment (Optional): If available, please submit a copy of the applicant's gifted assessment conducted by a school, independent tester, or psychologist.
